Exclusive:Liam Kitching clears Sheffield United hurdle as Blades close in on Coventry City deadline-day transfer
Coventry City defender Liam Kitching is closing in on a move to Sheffield United after completing his medical, with the Blades finally nearing a deal for the centre-half they have been chasing all summer
Liam Kitching has completed his medical at Sheffield United, The Star has been told, as the Coventry City man’s move to Bramall Lane edges ever closer. The 26-year-old emerged as a target for the Blades late in the summer window.
United have looked for centre-half reinforcements for all of the off-season but have had to wait until the final day, after disappointment in their pursuits of Harry Souttar, Anel Ahmedhodzic and lastly Joe Worrall, who has joined Wrexham on a permanent deal from Burnley.
Kitching helped Coventry City to the Championship title last season but has only played once this season, in the League Cup at Plymouth. He is understood to see United as an attractive proposition despite the noise around the club, and knows the area from his time at Barnsley.
Coventry need to trim their squad ahead of deadline day and Frank Lampard refused to rule out the possibility of departures before tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline. "If it’s best for them and best for the club, then it’s possible,” he said.
If the deal progresses as expected Kitching will compete with Japhet Tanganga, Mark McGuinness and Jamal Baptiste for a starting spot and his left foot will give United some much-needed balance at the back.
Callum O’Hare is edging closer to the Bramall Lane exit after travelling to Wales for his medical with Wrexham after the Blades accepted an offer from the Welsh side.
