What Sheffield United fans should expect to see from Coventry City defender Liam Kitching

Sheffield United have Liam Kitching in their sights as Chris Wilder looks to strengthen the centre of defence

Coventry City’s Liam Kitching has emerged as the leading candidate to bolster Chris Wilder’s defensive options.

The 26 year-old left footed centre half was stapled as a ‘mainstay’ of Coventry’s title winning side last season by Sky Blues manager Frank Lampard, starting 37 matches of the Championship season - racking up over 3,300 minutes.

He has made 93 appearances for the Sky Blues over the last three years but has yet to play a minute in the Premier League this season.

The defender kept 11 clean sheets in his previous campaign, and averaged better aerial duel stats than 95% of other centre-backs in the division, according to FotMob.

Kitching averaged 6.25 clearances a game and was dribbled past 0.22 times, on average per 90.

The current Coventry man is widely regarded as a ball-playing defender who maintained 84% passing accuracy during their title-winning campaign.

He (almost) never loses the ball, too - he only recorded being dispossessed three times during the 25/26 Championship season.

So, what could he bring to Bramall Lane?

His calm, level-headed approach to defending could pair nicely with Tanganga’s more ‘aggressive’ style of defending.

He is an experienced defender who is clearly a craftsman at this level, but perhaps lacks the quality to make the leap to top-flight football and retain his starting spot.

After signing a contract extension with Coventry in February 2026, manager Frank Lampard spoke positively about him, and described him as ‘one of the mainstays of their performances’ that season.

However, despite Lampard’s previous comments about the defender, Coventry have just confirmed the signing of Manchester City’s 18-year-old Stephen Mfuni on a season-long loan, which does indicate that Kitching could be surplus to requirements at his current club as they fight to stay in the Premier League.

As a testament to his commitment to the game, Kitching was praised by Lampard as a ‘throwback’ in August 2025 after he played 90 minutes at Pride Park vs Derby County after he spent the night in a labour ward with his partner.

Despite the baby still not being born on the morning of the fixture, Kitching travelled to Derby, played 90 minutes and then immediately returned to his partner after securing three points with a 5-3 victory over The Rams.

Sheffield United could not only have a quality Championship defender on their hands, but also a true professional who is immensely committed to his team.
