Lundstram and United have been in a contract impasse for a while, although the offer that United initially made remains on the table for the former Everton midfielder.

But as things stand, Lundstram's spell as a Blade looks to be winding down.

Here's how a selection of Blades fans reacted to the news that he can leave on Twitter...

@nathan_sufc22: He’s been a decent player for us over the last few years but if he doesn’t want to be here then let him leave. We will pick up a decent fee for him instead of letting him go on a free, it’s a win-win for us tbh

@JBaxby: Wonder if he will go Bournemouth as part of the Brooks deal

@ColliverM: Got to do everything we can (within reason) to keep him. Vital to our team and system.

@daveb1889: We need him for the job he does, will only happen if Wilder can find replacement but remember when he signed Norwood and let Evans go

@shawberryfields: Can only think he has been a consummate professional for the Blades or Wilder won't have picked him.

@Blades_analytic: Be shocked if this happens. Started 6/6, played full 90 4 times. Adds goal threat from midfield which we badly need & despite having this contract dispute he's never downed tools, gave 100% and been one of our better performers this season so far.

@gazza2k12: It's obvious he doesn't want to stay. He wanted to go. So let him go in January. I don't think he deserves a start or bench anymore....

@neilsrobertson: He did well last season, and ok this. A shame to see him go, but it is what it is

@jamesmarkburke: He works hard on the pitch and clearly off he’s first on Wilder's team sheet, think he’s looked very good this season going forward and will personally be gutted to see him go

@JONEZY04413334: If he does leave ... thank you for the service. He has played a part in getting us where we are today ... wish him well ... and move on. I don't understand a lot of United fans who insist on constantly digging at him ... if he leaves he leaves. Part and parcel of football

@StocksColin: If he isn’t going to sign a contract then club needs to sell

@Michael89300079: I think John is an asset but if United need the funds then so be it.

@ceeps1972: Trust the club to do what is best. Hopefully it won’t be a case of you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.

@MikeSimo23: Sell Lundstrum buy Brooks and Ampadu ... If Carlsberg did transfer windows!

@ChrisPlatts6: This highlights the greed of footballers and agents as which Premier League team does he actually improve or does he just want to be a fringe player with a few minutes here and there just for more money or to get sent on loan to a friend lower league team

@J_blade96: Whether you like him or not, he'll be hard to replace.
