The Blades forward was given a red card following an altercation with the Latics' Liam Kelly, after Matt Done had given the home side a 1-0 lead.

Adams will now miss three games and Adkins felt that it was a harsh punishment for the 19 year old.

He said: "Is it a sending off, is it a coming together? I think he's just pushed the player to get away - the referee has deemed it that and obviously we have had to go and defend the scoreline."

One negative on the day was the sight of Bob Harris being carried off on a stretcher with what Adkins said was a facial injury.

The manager added: "It's not nice to see him going off on a stretcher with a facial injury - I don't know the full diagnosis yet, we'll have to wait and see."
