United face their most daunting test of the season so far when Nick Cushing’s side travel to the Proact Stadium, with a place in the semi-finals up for grabs.

Ward discovered Tierney must sit out the fixture following Sunday’s FA Championship defeat by Aston Villa, when the youngster was diagnosed with concussion.

“Sam was brilliant during that match,” Ward, who insisted her team were unlucky to lose the top of the table clash. “For me, she was the best player out on the park and so there’s no point in dressing it up, to lose her for this one is a huge blow.”

United remained second in the table when, despite dominating for long periods and creating a number of chances, they were edged out when league leaders Villa scored a goal many observers felt should have been disallowed for offside.

New signings Mollie Green and Rhema Lord-Mears will also watch the tie with City from the stands after representing Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers respectively during the group stages.
