But how did United's players fare? Our man Danny Hall offers his player ratings from the game.

No real chance with either Stoke goal and saved well from Afobe late on. Handled a few crosses well when put under pressure by Stoke's big defenders. Hopefully he returns next season
A typically energetic performance from the Blades full back, up against the lively Stoke forwards on the left. Gave the ball away in the first half which led to a good Stoke chance, but some decent moments too
Battled well as he does every game although may think he could have done better with Shawcross's goal. Shifted into midfield in the second half before being replaced by Madine. A fine season for him
Spoiled the party late on when he blocked Charlie Adam's shot with the home fans praying for a farewell goal. A stunning first season at United for the defender
Harshly penalised a few times for fouls with not much in them but dealt well with Stoke's different threats. A player who should undoubtedly be able to cope in the Premier League
Another game, another goal for the left-back who's been prolific of late. A good finish got United back in the game although they couldn't find a late winner. Defended well when needed, too
Struggled to establish the usual control in midfield that United often get, and was replaced by Lundstram at half-time. What a signing he has been, celebrating his third promotion to the Premier League in as many seasons

My United man of the match. Constantly drove United forward and set up Dowell's goal with some superb skill. Showed the physical side of his game at times, too. Booked in the first half
A few signs of his ability at times in the first half but struggled to show them consistently against a very good Stoke midfield. Taken off at half time but can look back at his season with a lot of pride
Some good moments mixed with some frustrating ones but reaffirmed his status as a fans' favourite with a little jig at the end to the Allez Allez Allez song. Will be relishing his first taste of the top flight
Unlucky not to score in the first half when his volley was deflected onto the post, via Ryan Shawcross' hand as replays later showed. Worked tirelessly for the team and helped set up Stevens' goal
A tidy display from the sub, who drove United on at times and also gave them a bit of extra bite in midfield
Got the goal but gave the ball away carelessly at times when teammates had made good runs
Replaced Chris Basham and showed a few nice touches in his time on the pitch
