But how did United's players fare? Our man Danny Hall gives his player ratings from the game.
Untroubled for most of the game but was alert and decisive when he raced out to deny Magennis as he raced onto a throughball, taking the ball and none of the man. Kicking and general distribution was spot-on
Superb ball over the top for Sharp's unselfish square ball and was a constant bundle of energy for United down that right hand side. Just never seems to stop running and typified his display with a late surge forward, at 2-0 up with two minutes remaining

Showed his versatility and importance to the team again when he was shifted into midfield in the second half to help shore up the middle of the park. Crossing at times was a little wayward but he is, after all, a defender by trade. Superb tackle to deny Ameobi a tap-in
Improved with a change of boots at half-time and even ventured forward at one stage, when United had the centre-half overlapping a centre-half overlapping the full-back. Won everything in the air and was tidy on the ball, too
Seemed fired up for the game from the start and got involved offensively from the first whistle down the left. Comfortably dealt with the pace of Bolton's front two Donaldson and Ameobi and rarely looked troubled all afternoon, if at all
Caused havoc with two well-struck efforts in the first half and did a solid job for United, both offensively and defensively. Possibly an underrated cog in the United operation but one that is so vital to the way Wilder's team set up and would be fully deserving of a new, improved deal
Qualities on the ball are obvious but showed what he brings off it early on, too, harrying Donaldson down the line until he ran the ball out of play. Earns an extra half-mark for a superb free-kick to set up Sharp's second and ended the game with the captain's armband
A mixed bag early on, Fleck improved as the game went on and showed why he is so efficient in this system. Mixture of terrier-style tackles to win back the ball and intelligence to use it once he had done so ... apart from when he smashed one effort high into the Kop, at least!
Took a throughball down beautifully and almost forced an early own goal out of Wheater and was a threat throughout for the Blades, almost feeding McGoldrick for a second shortly after the deadlock was broken. Never hides from the ball even when things aren't going his way. Replaced by Stearman
Scored one and made the other, taking his total to 19 league goals this season and 20 in all competitions. His first was power and unselfishness, squaring for McGoldrick to tap home; the second typical Sharp, meeting a superb cross to head home in front of the Kop as he has so many times before. Withdrawn with five minutes to go to a standing ovation.
Grew into the game as the half went on, and two highlights saw him beat two players with delicious bit of skill and almost release Sharp with an intelligent reverse-pass. Netted United's opener and was later replaced by Gary Madine
Brought on to see out the game and did so perfectly, slotting into the back three as United changed shape again in the game
Made his home debut, coming off the bench to replace McGoldrick and was inches away from a goal as he stretched to meet Dowell's cross
Showed a few neat touches after coming off the bench and a clever cross was only inches away from Madine's head at the end
