McBurnie scored his second goal in United colours last weekend, firing past David de Gea on the stroke of full-time to ensure another excellent performance from Wilder’s side did not go unrewarded.

The Scotland international’s effort, after the visitors struck three times in the space of seven second-half minutes to cancel-out strikes from John Fleck and Lys Mousset, was his first since

August’s meeting with Leicester City and ended an 11 match drought in all competitions.

But Wilder, who spent £20m prising McBurnie away from Swansea City during the close season, insisted the manner in which the 23-year-old took his chance revealed his “capability” and “quality”.

“I was delighted for Oli,” the United manager said. “That showed what he’s all about, the capability he’s got and the quality he’s got. He deserved it as well, because of all the work he’s been putting in.”

“They (forwards) always want to get their names on there (the scoresheet),” Wilder continued. “Even though they’ve all been contributing, all of them, in other ways. So he’ll feel great after that, especially as it was such an important one at a critical moment of the game.”

McBurnie’s return to form could not have been more timely, given concerns Mousset could miss the visit to Molineux due to injury. The Frenchman is receiving treatment for a hamstring complaint with McBurnie likely to start alongside David McGoldrick if he fails to recover in time.

Wilder, whose team are sixth in the table, a point behind fifth-placed Wolves, said: “All of the lads in the eleven are being pushed hard, really hard, by the ones trying to get in.”
