The Frenchman, who started at Molineux after recovering from the hamstring injury he sustained against Manchester United last weekend, scored his latest effort since a close season move from AFC Bournemouth after only two minutes of the game.

Matt Doherty later equalised for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side but, asked about Mousset’s contribution, Wilder said: “He’s just been given a chance and he’s taken it. We’ve not done anything dramatically different with Lys. But he’s just more involved for us than he was down there and sometimes that happens.”

Mousset endured a frustrating spell on the south coast, with Eddie Howe utilising him primarily as substitute before sanctioning his move to Bramall Lane.

“Sometimes, you just have people ahead of you,” Wilder said. “It happens. And you can’t just keep on staying patient. That’s just the way it is.”
