Sheffield United: Could this be the key to unlocking Dean Henderson’s future next season?

Dean Henderson's situation could become clearer over the coming days after Manchester United, the former England under-21 international's parent club, offered an improved contract to his fellow goalkeeper David de Gea.

Henderson has made no secret of his desire to rejoin Sheffield United next season, having helped Chris Wilder's side win promotion to the Premier League after spending last term on loan in South Yorkshire. However, doubts about de Gea's future at Old Trafford have so far prevented another temporary agreement from being processed, with Ole Gunnar Solskjær's employers wanting to address the Spaniard's situation first. With reports suggesting de Gea has been offered an improved deal worth over £300,000 a week - and that the 28-year-old is minded to accept - that could prove the catalyst for a fresh round of talks with United, who want Henderson to anchor their defence for another 12 months at least.

Despite revealing they are in "constant dialogue" with their top-flight rivals, Wilder and negotiators acting on his behalf have yet to officially secure Henderson's release although a deal is thought to have been reached in principle.

Aged 22, Henderson opened contract talks of his own with Manchester United after returning from Euro 2019 duty last month. Solskjær has suggested he must also accept fresh terms before being allowed to depart.
