The goalkeeper, who was capped five times by England, made 675 appearances for United before retiring in 1971.

Signed from Worksop Town, Hodgkinson made his league debut against Newcastle nearly two decades earlier before establishing himself as the club’s undisputed number one following Joe Mercer’s appointment as manager.

Hodgkinson later became a coach, working at clubs including Rangers, Everton, Aston Villa and Oxford United, and was awarded the MBE in the 2008 New Year Honours.
