The Republic of Ireland international was speaking after hearing his manager Chris Wilder insist he has “no idea” how Sunday’s game against Norwich City will unfold following the latest controversy involving the new system.

Wilder expressed his frustration with how video referees are being used during the aftermath of Thursday night’s defeat by Newcastle; Jono Shelvey effectively being allowed to score the visitors’ second goal when United’s defence stopped after spotting an offside flag had been raised. Andre Marriner, who was reviewing decisions at Stockley Park, subsequently ruled the strike should stand.

Responding to suggestions that United should have played to the whistle, Egan said: “The position I play, it’s going to come up a lot. When you see a flag go up, your natural instinct is to stop.

“The boy who went through (Shelvey), he did it as well. Then there were times when the flag went up and he (referee Stuart Attwell) blew straight away. So it’s confusing, And it’s frustrating.I don’t think there’s genuine confusion. I know there’s genuine confusion.”

Both Wilder and his counterpart at St James’ Park Steve Bruce later insisted it would have been better had Attwell’s assistant not raised his flag at all during their post-match interviews. Wilder later acknowledged his sense of injustice had been heightened by the fact United had a goal disallowed at Tottenham Hotspur last month.

when midfielder John Lundstram’s foot was adjudged to be in an offside position.

“You saw with us, when we had a toe given offside, that it’s supposed to be clear and obvious,” Egan said. “If it takes four minutes to decide, I don’t think it can be clear and obvious.

“It’s taking the adrenaline out of games. I was watching Leicester the other night (against Everton) and they can’t even celebrate a last minute goal. It definitely needs to be looked at and become more inconsistent.”
