Speaking as his team prepares for this week’s meeting with Jurgen Klopp’s side, Chris Wilder pointed to results during their recent promotion winning campaigns as evidence of the determination which exists within his squad.

United lost only two of their final 20 games en route to a second-placed finish in the Championship last term and two of their remaining 22 before lifting the 2017 League One title during Wilder’s first season in charge.

“I’m confident we can keep picking up results in the second part of the season,” he said. “We won’t lack desire.

“We’re a newly promoted side and we’ve got to keep reminding ourselves of that, You see the fixture list and it’s a tough one over the next five or six weeks. The challenges ahead of us are ones we need to meet head on.”

United face AFC Fylde following their trip to Anfield, before returning to league action when West Ham travel to South Yorkshire on January 10. Arsenal and Manchester City, who they faced at the Etihad Stadium yesterday, also feature on the agenda before the transfer window closes.

“Historically, in the second part of the season, we’ve been strong,” Wilder said. “Going Saturday to Saturday gives us a chance to rest and recover.

“The boys always go ‘all in’ and never anything less.”
