Quinn must prove fitness to Robson

STEPHEN Quinn will take his latest step towards full fitness when he wins his third Republic of Ireland under-21 cap against Portugal tomorrow.

Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson, who views the youngster as a possible solution to the problem left flank position, says Quinn must prove he has fully recovered from the ankle injury he sustained during a pre-season friendly at Alfreton before he is considered for Championship action.

The game, which takes place in Cork, is live on satellite television and Robson believes it could help accelerate the player's rehabilitation.

He said: "Stephen needs games really. It's as simple as that. He's doing well but he's just a little bit rusty. But yes, he's definitely part of my plans and a part of my squad, the same as anyone else."

Quinn's first appearance of the season came in the Republic's recent 2-2 draw with Germany.

A good performance against Portugal in the first of his country's European Qualifiers is likely to see him named in the squad to play England.

Quinn said: "I've been working hard in training and I'm looking to break into the first team.

"Playing for Ireland gives me a chance to play and I need some games now to get my match fitness back."

Tottenham's Wayne Routledge is the latest name to be linked with a move to Bramall Lane while Sunderland's Graham Kavanagh could also emerge as a possibility should he be deemed surplus to requirements at the Stadium of Light.

United reserves drew 1-1 with Rotherham in the Pontins League Cup yesterday.
