But the defender did not complete 90 minutes as he was replaced before the hour mark by Chris Basham.

The substitution may well have been pre-planned all along; the former Sunderland midfielder has not had a club since he left Blackburn Rovers in the summer, and is lacking match-sharpness.

But the ex-Manchester City man did look in a bit of trouble with his knee area just before making way for Basham, after a solid debut in the red and white stripes of United.

"Jack has been with us for a couple of weeks or so now and he's been excellent around the place,” Chris Wilder said after Rodwell signed.

"He offers us versatility and experience in a number of key positions and adds further depth to the group which is important at this stage of the season."
