Morecambe go for third Championship scalp

A THIRD round tie against opposition still finding their feet in the Football League might, in some quarters, be regarded as a bye into the later stages of the Carling Cup.

But tonight's game against Morecambe is likely to be anything but routine.

Sammy McIlroy's side, who won promotion via last season's Conference play-offs, have been beaten just once on their travels since May's triumph over Exeter City.

But it is their record in this competition, rather than positive results against Barnet, Chester and Tranmere, which will have caught Bryan Robson's eye as he plots his tactics for this evening's meeting at Bramall Lane.

Having already dispatched Preston and Wolves, Morecambe head east looking to add a third Championship scalp to their prestigious collection.

Garry Thompson, whose goal earned his team mates a draw at Peterborough on Saturday, scored Morecambe's third goal at Molineux.

Describing the experience as "unbelievable" and "brilliant" in his local newspaper column, the midfielder said: "We went to Molineux and fully deserved the win but we are making sure we are not getting carried away.

"Their manager Mick McCarthy told me after the game that we had played well and deserved the win - and when someone of his standing says that you know you have done something right."

McIlroy could included two familiar faces in his line-up.

Jon Newby, who spent a brief period on loan at United earlier in his career, appeared as an 87th minute substitute at London Road and has netted twice this term including one during the dramatic victory over Wolves.

Michael Twiss, another former United loanee, has scored once; against Notts County earlier this month.

For McIlroy, the game also provides an opportunity to meet his former Old Trafford colleagues Robson and Brian Kidd.

However football, not friendship, is at the forefront of his thoughts and he warned United that his players are growing in belief with every game.

"We'll go to Bramall Lane with the same attitude as we've shown in the previous two rounds," he said.

"Playing well at these big stadiums - and some of my players have never even been to grounds like Bramall Lane - has been a real bonus for us as its given us extra belief and confidence to the whole squad.

"It's also given me extra belief in my players."
