Kidd talking ugly in bid to ignite Blades

BRIAN Kidd says Sheffield United must perfect the art of winning ugly.

But Kidd, the club's assistant manager, insisted the club will not bow to public pressure and sacrifice their footballing principles in a misguided attempt to climb the Championship table.

United travel to Bristol City tomorrow in 19th position following Tuesday's draw with Cardiff City.

Boss Bryan Robson has made no secret of his desire to introduce a new passing game to Bramall Lane, with some critics blaming his beliefs for United's frustrating start to the season.

Blades Talk: Should Robson go?

But, speaking before the evening fixture at Ashton Gate, Kidd mounted an argument against making knee-jerk reactions.

"Take any successful team in the history and they know how to win well, how to win ugly, how to play good football and how to get stuck in," he said.

"Sometimes you have to adopt the fixed bayonet approach and other times you've got to be patient.

"You have to have all those different facets before you can be successful.

"Two weeks after a game people don't remember how you've played, they just remember the result.

"We've had nine games and I really believe the lads deserve more. The manager also does because of all the hard work he's putting in behind the scenes."

Robson will step up his search for a new loan signing after Nick Montgomery was diagnosed with pleurisy.

Rob Hulse has received the all-clear to take part in small scale training games.

Several United supporters have contacted The Star to defend Cardiff striker Robbie Fowler after it was claimed he verbally abused a fan after Tuesday's match.

The person in question is considering writing to the Football Association to complain about the player's behaviour but one witness said: "Yes Robbie came out with something he shouldn't have done but he just reacted to some terrible stick."
