Hulse sets date for comeback

FIT-again Sheffield United striker Rob Hulse has a Championship comeback target date.

He's not letting on when or where.

That's the way it's been for the six months he's sat out contemplating the double leg fracture that robbed the Blades of his goal-scoring prowess just when they needed it most.

His football exile ended on Wednesday night with a 20-minute cameo appearance in United's 5-1 win over Sheffield FC.

"In my own head I've got a target but I don't really want to talk about that. I just want to take it day by day. I'm feeling good, very good," he said.

"I was perfectly comfortable in the game. The main priority was to get through 20 minutes, changing direction, running, going and getting the ball, getting used to things again.

"I went in the next day for some fitness tests and from here I'll take it day by day.

"Everyone's pleased with how it's progressed. It's just over six months now. I'm feeling physically in really good condition. Now it's just a case of being sensible."

Manager Bryan Robson's call for Hulse to join the Blades' squad for the game at Dronfield was a surprise and a welcome one.

He almost marked his comeback with a goal against the UniBond League club who are celebrating 150 years in existence.

Late in the second half, he replaced hat-trick-making James Beattie only to drag a 20 yard shot wide.

"A bit of sharpness was missing but that's to be expected," he said. "I'm not worried about that, I'm not worried about anything really.

"I came through the game unscathed, it's under my belt and every day I'm raising the bar and improving."

The only certainty is that his comeback won't be rushed.

Said boss Robson: "It's important that Rob comes back when he's not only physically ready but mentally ready too.

"That's why it would be wrong to start talking about this or that date. I never do in these situations."
