Wilder has received plenty of plaudits for guiding the newly-promoted Blades to fifth place in their first campaign back in the Premier League since 2007.

And on Saturday his side continued their impressive form with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa courtesy of a second half brace by John Fleck.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Goals on Sunday show - co-hosted by ex-United star Chris Kamara - Bent singled out Wilder for his tactical changes after a goalless first half at Bramall Lane.

"Chris Wilder is a top manager and, after the first half, for him to be able to change it (deserves praise)," said Bent, who hung up his boots in the summer.

"Also, the Sheffield United players have got to take a lot of credit as well because they are buying into what Chris Wilder wants and they're implementing it on the pitch really, really well.

"He's got to be up for manager of the year because what Sheffield United are doing this season is unheard of."

Bent also singled out midfielder Ollie Norwood for special praise.

"His range of passing is incredible,” he said. “What I like about him as well is that when the defenders do overlap he's the one who slots back into that space they've (created).

"For me he's probably the most important component to that Sheffield United team because he just slots in when people make runs."
