Morgan, who was awarded a testimonial in the summer as reward for his services to United, has rejoined Danny Wilson whom he played under for a short time while at Barnsley and then again at United.

Former Sheffield United manager Wilson took over as Spireites boss on Christmas Eve and now 38 year old Morgan has made the switch to the Proact, having until now been under 21s coach at Bramall Lane.

The move brings to an end an almost 13 year spell at United, where after being signed by Neil Warnock in 2003, Morgan became club captain, famously leading the team back into the Premiership during that time, and also had two spells as caretaker boss following the departures of Wilson and then David Weir.

The Barnsley-born former central defender was a first team coach at the Blades under Nigel Clough but picked up a different role when Nigel Adkins took over in the summer.

Adkins said of Morgan's departure: "We wish Chris well, he is a legend at this Football Club and he will always be welcome back. This is a great opportunity for him to work closely with an experienced manager as he looks to develop his own career."

Morgan's new boss, Wilson said: "Chris has been a very loyal and hardworking individual throughout his career. He is reliable and dependable and he commands respect in the dressing room. As well as being a good organiser, with bags of energy, Chris has a great sense of humour so he is able to relax people. I have no doubt the players will respond well to his coaching methods."
