The youngster was something of a surprise start when he was parachuted in to make his Premier League debut earlier in the season, after only sporadic appearances in a Blades shirt in the seasons previous.

Bryan has caught the eye of late with some impressive displays, the latest of which came in a 1-0 win over Aston Villa that United played with 10 men for over half an hour after the sending off of Phil Jagielka.

And the former Manchester City man – who is out of contract in the summer - has been told that he can earn a fresh deal at Bramall Lane between now and the end of a season that looks like it will end with United relegated to the Championship.

Why Sheffield United didn't appeal Phil Jagielka's controversial red card against Aston Villa

“I’m delighted for Kean,” said Wilder, ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with Southampton.

“He came through Manchester City’s system and was highly thought of for a long time. He had injury issues and it’s opened up for him, and there’s an opportunity for him to put a strong claim down to earn a contract and move forward with it.”

Wilder has previously highlighted the players in his squad that don’t play as the most important, for their invaluable contributions to two promotions in three seasons.

“I think our recruitment has been unfairly criticised at times and we’ve signed some fabulous players to come in and do that job,” Wilder added.
