'It doesn't matter how old you are' - Sky pundit urges Wilder to give Sheffield Utd ace more minutes

Sky Sports pundit Lianne Sanderson has urged Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder to give veteran striker Billy Sharp more minutes.

The 34-year-old was given the nod in Wednesday night's 2-1 victory over Manchester United, and put in an influential display before being substituted for eventual match-winner Oli Burke in the 70th minute.

For the most part, Sharp has struggled for game time this season, however, and his start at Old Trafford was just his third start in the Premier League this season.

Despite his limited action, the forward has struck twice in the top flight, as well as providing a goal and an assist in last weekend's FA Cup win over Plymouth Argyle.

And Sanderson is convinced that he must be given a greater role by Wilder as the Blades look to mount an improbable escape from relegation this term.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Football Show, the ex-England international said: “I just want to mention Billy Sharp.

"I think when he plays, it doesn’t matter how old you are, he scores goals.

"I think he brings a different element to Sheffield United. I don’t know why he’s often on the bench.

"I know there’s his age and stuff like that, but I think he does bring something different.

"If he can play, they’re a better team when he plays.”

Last night’s win over title-chasing United took the Blades’ points tally to eight for the season.

The gap between themselves and 19th-placed West Brom is now just three points, but Wilder’s men are still 10 points adrift of safety.
