Interest in Rangers, Burnley 'target' John Lundstram expected to increase when midfielder's Sheffield United contract officially expires

Any interest in former Sheffield United man John Lundstram is expected to ramp up towards the back end of next week when his Bramall Lane contract officially expires.

The former Everton midfielder rejected multiple offers of a new contract as his time at United came to an end, with former boss Chris Wilder revealing that they would have made Lundstram one of the highest earners at the club.

But Lundstram turned them down in favour of a free-transfer move elsewhere, with Rangers, Burnley and Crystal Palace amongst the clubs linked with him.

No announcement over Lundstram’s new club has yet been made, but it’s thought that the process may speed up when his United contract officially expires on June 30. The ongoing European Championships have complicated the transfer market across the board in football, while many clubs are reassessing their summer plans as the financial effects of Covid-19 continue to be felt.

For Lundstram’s part, he was essentially playing in the Premier League under the contract he signed when he arrived at the Blades from Oxford United, albeit with the standard promotion bonus and wage increase thrown in.

The midfielder’s representatives are understood to believe their client could command more elsewhere – especially with no transfer fee. When that is the case, players usually receive a heftier signing-on bonus or an inflated salary.

Despite some concerns amongst supporters over his commitment to the cause at stages of last season, Lundstram - a two-footed midfielder with a good engine and an eye for goal - is unlikely to be short of offers. Whether they match his own ambition when they eventually materialise remains to be seen.
