'If I was Chris Wilder, I'd walk' ... 'Sorry but it's all over' - Sheffield United fans split after defeat to Crystal Palace

Another match, another defeat and the writing is well and truly on wall for Sheffield United’s Premier League future as the Blades broke the record for the worst top-flight start to the season following their 2-0 loss at Crystal Palace.

Jeffrey Schlupp opened the scoring and Eberechi Eze ghosted past a statuesque United defence to double the lead on the stroke of half time and from then on it was game over with the Blades doing little to trouble the Palace backline.

United fans’ emotions have taken many of them from sympathy for the plight, to frustration and now a dose of anger such was the poor performance at Selhurst Park but rather than calling for heads to roll – the manager’s at least – some felt that they wouldn’t be shocked if Chris Wilder had decided that the mostly glorious reign at Bramall Lane shuld probably come to an end.

On twitter @tyronej1984 posted: “Still no one else I’d rather have in charge next season, but wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him walk before the end of this one.”

Fellow Blade @Firthy_6 gave full backing to the manager: “CW come in 4 years ago, reshuffled the squad and made us a force. He has made some mistakes this year but with a wage gap it’s hard to push on. Back him, rebuild, carry on the journey, trust in CW”

And @ijparkes says the boss is being let down by his players.

The Blades fan posted: "If I was Wilder, I’d walk now. This group of players are done and they are embarrassing him. He’s made mistakes himself this season but he deserves better than this.”

While @doncarlos83 would prefer an exodus than see Wilder leave, posting: “I would genuinely rather see every single first team player get released and start again than Chris Wilder leave the club”

And @dan_lawless said: “I can genuinely see Wilder walking. If that happens, I cannot be be held responsible the tears I'll shed”

@mopedtuninghelp felt those being brought in weren’t good enough to compete in the top flight: “I think the moral of the story for #sufc is don’t think championship players can cut it in the premier league continually. Poor recruitment has cost us this year. If we want to compete, we need to pay the wages.”

And @steve_PR89 is already looking ahead: “I know it's difficult now but think of the start of next season. Fans back in the ground, cleared out some of the dead wood and who would you want to be in charge? Surely Wilder? This season can be forgotten and we move on. First real bump in the road in 4yrs!”

@markbatham also puts the blame on the squad: “Too many players dining out on last seasons successes. Gone to their heads and now think they’re untouchable. Disappointment in their attitude is a massive understatement. Pathetic.”

However there were a few who felt Wilder had run his race. Fan @PavlovLore posted: “He's got to go. No more messing about now. No excuses. No ifs or buts. We're utterly useless at every level. I love him and what he did for the club, and for that incredible first 4 seasons. But he has to leave before it gets nasty. Sorry, but it's all over.”
