United, who play their third match of the new campaign at Aston Villa next week, had signed six new players during the summer window before Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie at Burnley - with an estimated initial spend of around £16m.

Although that is big by their own standards, particularly given the fact Sander Berge cost £22m when he arrived from Genk eight months ago, it pales into insignificance compared to the near £65m Villa have so far invested since narrowly avoiding relegation last term.

United, who finished the previous campaign in ninth, also received around £3m and Oliver Burke in return when Callum Robinson joined West Bromwich Albion recently.

“We don’t have the same as most other teams, if not all of them, in this division,” Wilder said. “But that’s not a complaint and I’m comfortable with the situation. In fact, I want to thank the owner for his backing because he’s given me everything he can. If he could pump £200m at the drop of a hat into the team, then I’m sure he would. In fact I know he would, because everyone has seen how much he loves his football. But we can’t do that. What we can do, though, and what he’s done, is give me as much support as he possibly can and I’m thankful for it.”
