How big Euro 2020 decision will affect John Fleck, Sander Berge and Sheffield United

UEFA have announced official confirmation of the postponing of Euro 2020, which will now begin in 2021 as Europe continues to battle the coronavirus crisis.

This morning UEFAheld a meeting of representatives of its 55 associations, the European Clubs' Association, the European Leagues and world players' union Fifpro to discuss football's response to the outbreak.

The Blades’ Irish contingent of David McGoldrick, Enda Stevens and John Egan were set to face the final qualifying stage along with Scotland’s John Fleck and Bosnia’s Mohamed Besic at the end of this month. Sander Berge’s Norway were also involved.

The move is in part designed to allow leagues across the continent, including the Premier League, a chance to complete their season before the end of June.

Play is set to resume in England on April 4, but experts have warned that the likelihood of it being safe to do so is slim.

Concerns had been raised about the fact that player contracts run out before the end of June. United have a handful of senior players out of contract this summer.

Football across the continent has virtually ground to a halt. The only countries in Europe which featured top-flight league action on Saturday were Russia, Turkey, Hungary, Serbia and Ukraine. Turkey's matches were played behind closed doors and on Monday, the Hungarian FA announced its league was suspended.

All Champions League and Europa League fixtures scheduled for this week have been called off. There is no indication that an immediate resumption for any league or competition is likely, throwing the complicated football calendar into chaos.
