Joe Willock scored the winner in first-half stoppage time, with Aaron Ramsdale again at his best to keep the scoreline down. Here’s how we rated United’s players.

Aaron Ramsdale 8

Made two more stunning saves to add to his own personal highlights reel this season but gave United a scare when he stayed down holding his shoulder after keeping out Shelvey's header. He continued, but didn't look too comfortable immediately after.

Jayden Bogle 5

Came back into the side with George Baldock unable to shake off a knock and fizzed a beauty of a cross across the face of Newcastle's goal, with Jebbison unable to get on the end of it.

Chris Basham 5

Given a really tough evening on his return to the north-east by Saint-Maximin, who looked in the mood from the first whistle and was a constant threat with his tricks and flicks.

John Egan 5

Beaten on a few occasions by Saint-Maximin and looked hesitant after that, although he was rarely if ever beaten in the air. Had an effort on goal from a corner but it was comfortably saved by Dubravka

Jack Robinson 5

Played on Joelinton to allow the £40m man a sight of Ramsdale's goal, and was lucky he headed miles over. But has looked reasonably comfortable since he returned to the side after a long time out

Enda Stevens 5

Drifted inside at will and almost had a big hand in an early United opener, but McGoldrick blazed his shot wide when well placed. First-half booking meant he was walking a tightrope in the second and had to think twice about committing a tactical foul when he normally would have.

Ollie Norwood 5

Gave the ball away on too many occasions in the first half and will have been a relieved man to see a Newcastle shot blocked on one of them. Booked after losing out to Willock and dragging the Newcastle goalscorer back as he looked to race away. Had two efforts on goal but couldn't hit the target

Ben Osborn 6

Full of his usual energy off the ball, and had a hand in a good early move that saw McGoldrick shoot wide. Replaced by Brewster as United changed shape in an attempt to get back in the game

John Fleck 5

Buoyed by his inclusion in the Scotland squad for this summer's Euros, Fleck looked after the defensive side of his game well and was often in the right place at the right time to snuff out the danger. Some decent crosses at the other end too

David McGoldrick 7

Spurned a glorious chance to put United ahead early in the game when his shot went the wrong side of Newcastle's goal after good build-up involving Osborn, Jebbison and Stevens. Later hit the bar with a brilliant effort and didn't stop running as he looked to find the equaliser

Daniel Jebbison 6

Kept his place deservedly after the weekend winner at Goodison, but couldn't have the same impact no matter how hard he tried

Subs

Rhian Brewster 6

Came on for Ben Osborn and showed a few neat touches

Femi Seriki

Made his Premier League debut as he replaced Jayden Bogle in the dying minutes of the game
