Pundits are even linking Sheffield United with a potential run to qualification for European football next season, in their first season back in the top flight for over a decade.

The Blades are even three points better off than Neville’s beloved Manchester United, after they lost 2-0 at Watford.

Neville has been left gobsmacked by the Blades’ start to the season, and speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, he sent a glowing message of praise to Chris Wilder’s battling side.

He said: “I’m sure that they won’t be getting carried away. Until they get to that point whereby it’s mathematically impossible for them to go down you can never take anything for granted in this league.

“But, when you watch them play, the organisation, the defensive quality, the big goal threat up-front.

“I was watching Sheffield United a couple of weeks ago for the Manchester United game, and for 70 minutes they were so dominant, they should have won that game. How they didn’t I’ll never know; Manchester United for ten minutes were fantastic.

“It’s a great story, and I think that we want to see that. The idea that sometimes teams get criticised in the Premier League for spending money, sometimes teams get criticised for not spending money. But then there are clubs come up sometimes that just feel like they’re doing you right, and it feels like Sheffield United are doing it right.

“They’re believing quite a bit in the players from last season, the manager obviously, it’s working well, and I have to say that they’re a great watch as well. It’s a good story, I hope it continues.”
