Jose Baxter marked his return to Sheffield United’s first team with the first goal in tonight’s League One clash at Walsall.
But their lead was cancelled out in the second half when United’s failure to defend crosses into the box cost them dear once again, and they were forced to settle for a point.
Baxter opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a curling effort which gave former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell no chance.
O’Donnell had moments earlier produced a stunning save to deny Matty Done, as United sought a response following their below-par second-half showing at Scunthorpe on Saturday.
But Ashley Grimes’ header dragged Walsall level as his near-post effort beat recalled Mark Howard.
Goalkeeper Howard had earlier returned to United’s starting line-up, with Baxter and Jason Holt also featuring in manager Nigel Clough’s first choice eleven. Steven Davies dropped to the bench where Ryan Flynn featured following injury. Chris Basham, Stefan Scougall, Terry Kennedy and Paul Coutts were all unavailable for selection against the JP Trophy finalists.
