Former Sheffield United star raises hopes of Sander Berge's availability to face West Ham after Covid-19 scare

Sheffield United could have been handed in a boost in their quest to declare Sander Berge eligible to face West Ham this weekend... via one of their old players.

The Norwegian's availability for Sunday's class is currently unclear, after he and his teammates found themselves at the centre of a Covid-19 storm after Omar Elabdellaoui tested positive for the disease.

Berge and Co. were moments away from taking off for their Nations League clash with Romania when they were ordered off the plane, and an entirely new squad was assembled for Wednesday evening's game in Austria.

The saga has led to a disagreement between the Norwegian football authorities and their government, with Berge potentially caught up in the middle of it.

If the midfilder was forced to enter a period of self-isolation, he would be ruled out of Sunday's game against the Hammers.

But Jan Aage Fjortoft, a fellow Norwegian who played for United in the 1990s, reported this week that Norway's players who ply their trade in the Bundesliga - like Erling Braut Haaland of Borussia Dortmund - will be permitted to play this weekend, if they return two negative Covid-19 tests.

Germany's coronavirus laws are different to the UK's, but with Celtic confirming that Mohamed Elyounoussi and Kris Ajer are both training with the Glasgow giants ahead of their weekend game, the signs look positive for Berge.

United were almost caught out by self-isolation rules with John Egan, but the defender was able to face Fulham after the last international break despite being identified as a contact of a player who tested positive for coronavirus.
