Former Sheffield United favourite is back in football

Former Sheffield United defender Kieron Freeman has returned to football, four months after leaving Bramall Lane when his contract with the Premier League club expired.

The 28-year-old has agreed a short term deal at League One side Swindon Town, where former Sheffield Wednesday and Republic of Ireland midfielder John Sheridan is now manager.

A two time promotion winner with United, Freeman was a member of the squad Chris Wilder guided to the League One title in 2017 before finishing as Championship runners-up two seasons later.

He has arrived at the County Ground as a free agent, and his expected to make his debut against Ipswich Town this weekend.

“I’m buzzing to be here and to get it over the line,” Freeman said. “I can’t wait to get started.

“I feel that this is a great opportunity for me, I’ve played here a few times and I’ve always enjoyed it.”

“The management team have been brilliant and really welcoming,” he continued, speaking to Town’s official website. “They’ve told me what they want and what they want to do and I’m really excited about it.”

Freeman made more than 100 appearances during his time in South Yorkshire, and was named in the PFA’s League One Team of the Year during Wilder’s first campaign at the helm. He has represented Wales at under-21 and senior level, winning his senior cap during a meeting with Albania in 2018.

Freeman started his career with hometown club Nottingham Forest, and also enjoyed spells with Derby County, Notts County and Mansfield Town before joining United on loan in 2014 and then permanently a year later.
