Former Sheffield United man Dominic Calvert-Lewin happy to bide his time for England, ahead of Scotland clash | Skipper Harry Kane makes admission about his place

As a youngster in Sheffield United’s academy, Dominic Calvert-Lewin dreamed of playing and scoring for England, rather than sitting on the bench – but the Everton striker is content to play whatever role is asked of him ahead of Friday’s mouth-watering clash against Scotland at Wembley.

The former Blade is again expected to take his place among the substitutes against the Scots, with captain Harry Kane set to lead the line once again.

But Kane admitted this week that he does not see himself as undroppable and with four goals in 10 senior caps, Calvert-Lewin is certainly breathing down his skipper’s neck as England look to make it two wins from two in Euro 2020.

“For me I just make sure I am ready,” Calvert-Lewin said. “Ready when I am called upon. Harry is the captain of the team and he is the man leading the line at the moment.

“From a young boy I dreamed of playing for my country and coming to a major tournament, and as a young kid you dream of playing, perhaps not sitting on the bench. But if that’s my role then so be it and I’ll do it to the best of my ability.”

Kane has 34 goals in his 55 England caps to date and will have an eye on breaking Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals. But, asked this week if he is undroppable by boss Gareth Southgate, the Spurs man admitted: “"You will have to ask Gareth but I never look at it that way.

"We have great competition for places. Dominic has come in and done great.

"For me it is about training how I train every day. Try and be the best and try and improve every day and when I play, try and give my best for the team.

"I think that is what everyone is doing at the moment and I am sure there will be rotation among all the players in this tournament and everyone is waiting for the chance to try and make an impact."

Aaron Ramsdale was this week drafted into the England squad, with Dean Henderson injured, and John Fleck is expected to be in the Scotland 23 after missing the opener against the Czech Republic.
