Sheffield United’s players had been deemed a soft touch by many this season but they exploded that view against Aston Villa with a terrific display of bravery to see off Dean Smith’s side.

Everyone in a red and white shirt played their part in a courageous showing that was made all the more difficult by the controversial red card given to veteran defender Phil Jagielka.

David McGoldrick had given United the lead in the first half and after that, particularly following Jagielka’s sending off it was all about digging in for their fourth win of the season.

And boy, did Blades fans enjoy it.

@gavp77 posted on twitter: “Fight. Desire. Commitment. And a bad VAR decision. The Sheffield United way. Great result tonight. Onwards to the next game with no centre halves”

@LWCon_86 said: “Also, in the wake of plenty of criticism, Ollie Norwood was outstanding tonight. Kept wanting the ball then when we had to dig in he was one of a number to put his body on the line when it mattered”

@azzle94 said: “VAR ruined the game with the red card, but what a defensive performance from #SUFC tonight. Every man outstanding. Did their jobs brilliantly & an excellent 3 points. I said at Christmas I would be happy with +12 points. We’ve done it. Let’s get a few more then let’s bounce back.”

@jonnyFrith added: “Now that’s my kind of #sufc performance. That’s all I ask win lose or draw we put bodies on the line”

@tyronej1984 posted: “Didzy obviously the main man, but what a performance from Kean Bryan tonight. The smallest centre half I’ve ever seen and he’s won every header tonight.”

@Clarkeb921 said: “What an effort put in tonight, even before red card, I thought we was paying well, Norwood best he's played for a while? Defensively rock solid, bodies on line Bryan & ampadu had Watkins in pocket+ a deserved clean sheet for ramsdale”

And @ryanmathews1893 posted: “YES BLADES that's what I'm talking about fight passion throwing your bodies in the way if were gonna go down let's go down fighting”
