The former Chesterfield stopper arrived on a full-time basis at Middlewood Road in 2018 after Nicky Weaver was promoted to first-team duties, having retired from a successful playing career at the age of just 31 with recurring shoulder injuries.

He has been praised for his work in developing the likes of Josh Render during his time at Wednesday but now moves on to work in the academy at Shirecliffe under Blades academy manager Jack Lester, who played alongside Lee at Chesterfield.

It is understood he will operate in a similar role to the one he held at Wednesday.

Speaking to The Star after his first year at the Hillsborough club Lee said: “It has been a challenge but it has been really enjoyable up to now and I am really enjoying getting my teeth into it.

“It is really good, it is not something I thought I had a passion for [development], but it turns out I do which is fortunate.

“Not everyone gets to work in an industry where it is passion as well and I’ve really enjoyed passing on my knowledge to the goalkeepers. We have got some great talent coming through so that makes it a little easier as well.”

Lee, now 34, was a firm fans’ favourite with the Spireites, making 328 league appearances.

During his time with Chesterfield, Lee twice won the League Two title and helped his side to Johnstone's Paint Trophy success in 2012.
