Diego De Girolamo will return to Sheffield United in pre-season in a bid to earn himself a new contract, manager Nigel Adkins has confirmed.
Italian U20 international De Girolamo, born in Chesterfield, appeared to be on his way out of Bramall Lane last season after failing to agree terms on a new deal under Adkins’ predecessor, Nigel Clough.
But following Clough’s sacking, De Girolamo will get the chance to impress United’s new manager when pre-season training commences early, on June 29.
“I’ve spoken to Diego’s agent, and to Diego himself,” Adkins, whose side will travel to Gillingham on the opening day of the League One season, said last night.
“He’s a really talented player and, like the rest of the players, he’ll be in on the first day of pre-season with a clean slate. That will give us the chance to look at him on the field, and speak to him and find out what he’s thinking.
“We need to assess what we have, what Diego can offer, and then go from there.
“But it’s important for us to have people with both the attitude and ability to do well for this club. Both are very important.”
De Girolamo scored for United in the FA Cup against Preston, but was later sent out on loan to York City and Northampton Town.
United, meanwhile, are away at Wigan on Boxing Day. Blades’ Fixtures: P58
