Although a number of other Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in the 23-year-old, including Chelsea, the player’s advisors are thought to be delighted with the progress their client has made since joining Sheffield United in the summer of 2018.

But with Chris Wilder’s side mounting a serious challenge for a place in Europe before the campaign was suspended due to coronavirus, Henderson’s ideal scenario is agreeing a third stint in South Yorkshire before returning to the North-West as Manchester United’s number one; should de Gea retain the Norwegian’s faith.

Wilder approached Solskjaer about the possibility of extending Henderson’s stay just before Christmas, but has since declined to provide “daily updates” out of respect for the Norwegian.

Henderson’s deal is scheduled to expire on May 30, but with the 2019/20 programme unlikely to be completed before that date, United are confident Manchester United will allow him to remain in situ for their final 10 top-flight outings of the season.
