Sheffield United's first season back in the Premier League has not been over for a week yet, and already the on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper has dominated the news agenda every day since Sunday's finale at Southampton.

In a way, that's understandable. He is, after a stellar first season at top-flight level, hot property, with his immediate future complicated even further by talk of a mega-money offer from Chelsea and the ongoing presence of David De Gea in the Old Trafford goalmouth.

Also are in the equation are the Blades, hoping to bring him back to Bramall Lane for a third loan spell but also anxious to ensure that the ongoing uncertainty doesn't leave them short of a No.1 goalkeeper going into 2020/21.

Chris Wilder admits that he has held preliminary discussions with Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and now the waiting game begins. A number of angles are in play here. De Gea has had an up and down season, at best, but is thought to be the Premier League's highest-paid player and under contract for at least another three years. If Solskjær gets shut of him, who in world football would take on his wages?

If they did, what would Solskjær's next move be? Promote Henderson, or sign someone like Jan Oblak from Atlético Madrid? Henderson has no desire to sit on the Old Trafford bench, no matter who it is behind, and will reportedly only sign the new deal on the table if he's guaranteed first-team football. Henderson has two years, with an option of a third, left on his existing Manchester United deal.

But United - the original one, that is - cannot wait forever. The new Premier League season kicks off in just six weeks. Alternative targets have been drawn up, with the likes of Uğurcan Çakır, Aaron Ramsdale and Watford's Ben Foster linked with the Blades. The Henderson saga dragged on and on last season before he returned to Bramall Lane - and, no matter who takes the No.1 shirt next season, United hope for a similarly happy ending this time around, too.
