Saturday evening’s 1-0 win over Brighton came too late to effect United’s battle for survival, but did provide some welcome respite from a run of six successive defeats.

McGoldrick scored the winner against Brighton in the first half, and admitted afterwards: “We’re playing for our futures and the new manager is watching is.

“We want to stay at Sheffield United and we’re playing for that. We were on the back foot in the second half, they play good football, but we showed resilience.

“We showed we’re not going to give up, and that it’s not going to be an easy ride for anyone to get three points.

“We’ve had a lot of bad luck this year and we showed character, fighting to the end and putting our bodies on the line.

“We said we had to be a team and we showed that. It’s upset me, the relegation, and we’re just as gutted as the fans.

“We care about this club and we haven’t taken relegation well, we’re still at the bottom but we’re fighting for the club and I hope they can see that.”

With five games of the season remaining United climbed to 17 points with victory over Graham Potter’s side, and return to action next Sunday when they face Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
