Here's how we rated United’s players in victory ...
5. Anel Ahmedhodzic 8
Lined up in the middle of United's three with Egan on the bench and made his mark at the other end of the pitch with United's opening goal, a well-directed header which bounced in off the post for his second in as many games. Couldn't do enough to cut out Potts' excellent cross for Delap to tap home and survived a good-looking penalty call at first glance after upending Delap in the area but ref Martin waved the appeals away Photo: Ian Hodgson
6. Jack Robinson 6.5
Had a bizarre early moment when Norwood's pass went over his head and Robinson attempted to catch it as it went over his head, well before it had gone out of play! Showed rather more poise with a lovely sleight of foot to deceive his marker moments later. A typically steady Robinson display ended with a deserved ovation when he made way for Egan later in the game Photo: Simon Bellis
7. Max Lowe 6
Saw a fair bit of the ball down the left flank but his favoured low cross was repelled by the Preston defence. Held his own defensively in a solid if not spectacular display Photo: Naomi Baker
8. Ollie Norwood 7.5
Back in the side and back pinging his trademark Olliewood passes 80 yards onto the toe end of teammates with what looks like consummate ease. One of the best, a lovely outside-of-the-boot effort, set Jebbison free and led to United's second goal for Fleck. Looked like he'd never been out of the team and put his foot in when needed too.
