Wilder was installed as the favourite to succeed Lennon after his five-year reign at Bramall Lane came to an end earlier this month. Celtic parted company with Lennon last month after falling 18 points behind their big rivals Rangers in the table.

“Celtic have had a tough season and need someone to go in with fresh ideas and Chris Wilder will want to go his own way.

“He’ll want to do things his own way and he’ll change that club, no doubt about it.

“He’ll get the boys playing for him and you’ll see what a massive club it is. He’ll buzz off that, but if he doesn’t [go to Celtic], I’m sure he’ll get a big job somewhere.

“People will see what he’s done, one year out of five has gone wrong a little bit at Sheffield United but he’s had success at Oxford and Northampton and Halifax before that, so he’s got a good CV.”

McGoldrick also revealed that the news of Wilder’s departure came completely out of the blue for United’s players.

“We went into training and I was in the treatment room and someone said: ‘Look at this on Twitter’,” McGoldrick said.

“Someone posted something saying the gaffer was going to be sacked and we hadn’t heard anything about that.”
