The Blades boss watched on on Monday evening as United conceded from a corner for the second successive game, as they lost 1-0 on a controversial evening at Aston Villa.

Appearing to absolve goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale of any blame for defeats to Wolves and Villa in two Premier League games so far - "Rammers has had to make one save in two games and must be scratching his head, why we've got no points" - Wilder nevertheless warned his defence that they are "killing themselves" by "gifting" the opposition goals.

"We went 2-0 down early against Wolves, not from unbelievable creativity from a very good side," Wilder said.

"We gifted them two goals. And at Villa, it's not a well-worked goal.

"We're killing ourselves. If Jack Grealish beats three players and sticks the ball into the top corner, then that's a great goal.

"If we get done on the counter-attack, because we've been ambitious going the other way, you can semi-accept that.

"But I can't accept the gifts of goals we're giving.

"We're not one of the top sides, so we can't look at the fixture list and say 'we'll win this game and that one'.

"We've got to get over the hurdles in front of us, and we're making it too easy for teams in terms of the goals they're scoring against us."

United return to action on Sunday lunchtime, against Leeds - who got up and running in the Premier League with a 4-3 win over Fulham last weekend.
