The Blades, bottom of the table with only five points from 19 games before kick-off, had nine players out and could only name six substitutes against the title-chasing Red Devils on their own patch.

But Wilder's men went ahead through Kean Bryan, before they were pegged back by former defender Harry Maguire.

United kept their belief though, and secured their first victory at Old Trafford in almost 50 years when substitute Oli Burke netted the winner.

And Wilder, whose side return to Manchester this weekend to face another title contender in City, said afterwards: "The players are jumping about in there which they deserve to, because it's been a tough old season.

"We'll bring everyone back down to earth tomorrow to go again at the other side of town. I'm delighted for the players because they've gone through a hell of a lot this season.

"We talked about big moments which we took tonight. The second goal was a great reaction to the equaliser, to come back and stick our noses in front again, and it's a great moment for us."

"TC, Len Badger, Ted Hemsley..." Wilder added. "My old pals, who have been at the club a long time and follow us with everything that they have got.

"It's been a long time. It was a special result, and it had to be a special performance as well."
