But Chris Wilder, the United manager, revealed afterwards that Stevens was only taken off as a precaution after suffering a recurrance of the tight calf which forced him off in United’s last Premier League game against.

Stevens was replaced just after the hour mark by Ben Osborn against Norwich City, after picking up what looked to be a muscle injury to his right leg.

The Republic of Ireland full-back missed the midweek trip to Reading – and will now be assessed by United’s medical staff ahead of United’s trip to Newcastle United next weekend.
