Stearman was a member of the United squad which won promotion to the Premier League last season, scoring a crucial goal to beat Middlesbrough after stepping into the side.

The defender found his first-team opportunities limited following the signing of John Egan, while Phil Jagielka arrived in the summer to further push him down the pecking order at Bramall Lane.

United announced in the build-up to Friday’s win over West Ham that Stearman’s contract had been cancelled to allow him to join Championship side Huddersfield on an initial 18-month deal.

And Wilder said: “Richard did an outstanding job for us.

“He didn’t play much football but you saw the connection between him and the fans, and the end of season scenes after promotion.

“He was enjoying himself after contributing to the side and he went with our blessing and thanks for his efforts.”
