But Blades fans and, more importantly, the manager himself knows exactly why it was such a good move for all concerned when it was announced that David McGoldrick had signed a new contract at Bramall Lane.

Wilder said: “Delighted for David as well, we talked about from the club's perspective rewarding as well, and Didzy's been brilliant. We still feel, as we talked about with Ollie and the skipper there's a lot more football in David and a lot more to give to this football club.

“He's been outstanding since he walked through the door and he's enjoying his football and from our point of view it's been a great week.

“He's such an important member of the group. He gives us something a little bit different in terms of our link up play and the way we play. The obvious one and ‘Didzy’ knows and where we need to improve on as a group as well, but he's part of that and I'm really looking forward to working with him for the next couple of years.

“It's important to keep that continuity as well. We are going to be looking to strengthen at the end of the season when that new window does open, of course, and it is really important window by window, regardless from the financial aspect that group is better than it was at the start of the season and we are working really hard to make that happen.

“It's still important that we keep that core group together and David has been part of that. Off the pitch he's a tremendous influence on everybody and on the pitch his performances speak for themselves.”
