Chris Wilder explains Sheffield United future decision as Blades owners show faith amid rebuild
Chris Wilder decision explained as Sheffield United manager extends Bramall Lane stay
Sheffield United’s owners have doubled down on their faith in boss Chris Wilder after handing him a contract extension until the summer of 2028. The Blades chief’s deal was set to expire next summer.
But he has agreed to stay on until at least the following year, with confirmation this evening during the Blades’ pre-season camp in Valencia. United face Levante in their third friendly of pre-season tomorrow.
Wilder said: “I’m obviously delighted, and grateful for the support of everyone at the club.
"Anyone who knows me will tell you that my ambition and determination to succeed at this football club is still as strong as ever.
"I want to thank the co-chairmen, Steven and Helmy, the ownership group and Stephen Bettis for the faith they have shown in me and the staff.
"We're working hard behind the scenes to get everything ready for the season ahead and we'll be pushing hard to make this campaign - and future campaigns - successful for Sheffield United."
The Blades boss returned to Bramall Lane last September after the sacking of Ruben Selles, and guided United away from the relegation trouble they were in after six defeats from all six games under the Spaniard.
Wilder is now hoping to mastermind another rebuild of the Blades after they finished 13th in the Championship last season, with owners Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy pledging to support him in the transfer window in a statement to supporters earlier today.
Rosen flew to join the Blades’ pre-season camp in Valencia earlier this week amid the ongoing uncertainty at boardroom level, with former owner Prince Abdullah issuing a winding-up petition against COH Sports Bidco over £35m in allegedly unpaid instalments for the club.
Rosen said: "Chris is the right man to lead Sheffield United, and we couldn't be happier that he's committed his future to the club.
“His energy, his honesty and his understanding of what this club means to its supporters have been clear to all of us.
“This new deal is a straightforward reflection of our belief in him. We're glad Chris is here, and we're excited about what we can build together."
Co-chairman Helmy Eltoukhy added: "As custodians of Sheffield United, our commitment to the club, its supporters and its long-term success is absolute, and Chris is central to that vision.
“We want to see the Blades competing at the highest level of English football consistently, not as a one-off. Chris shares that ambition completely. We're proud to be moving forward together and excited for the season ahead."
