The Blades lost 2-0 to Liverpool at Bramall Lane after a decent first half display – thanks mostly to a superb performance by Aaron Ramsdale – came crashing down after the break when sloppy defending allowed Curtis Jones to open the scoring.

A deflected Roberto Firmino strike, which will go down as an own goal for Kean Bryan, made it 2-0 and really it as game over at that point, though Oli McBurnie at least should have scored when he headed wide from an Ollie Norwood cross while unmarked.

For United fans, it was the same old story, though many felt their side had performed reasonably well.

@KatherineRoot posted: “Do you know what! Que Será, Será...last season was amazing and made us all think it'd be easy! It ain't...but I love my team and can't wait until next season, when hopefully it'll be a better watch!”

@poppypea09 said: “I mean i’m not sure where people expectations are, you can talk about signings and whatever else but tonight we played Liverpool without 1 of our first choice centre halves and only conceded 2 (thanks to ramsdale)”

@LWCon_86 backed that up: “Didn't think that was too bad a performance in all honesty against a team who are just brilliant. Ramsdale outstanding in that opening 45, rest worked hard and just lacked cutting edge. Another bit of bad luck, and us not taking big moments. The way of the season really”

And @Adam70433875 added: “Don’t know why so many people are annoyed. Played well to be honest. Individual errors once again but we don’t have any of our starting centre backs fit so we were never going to be water tight against mane-firmino-saleh”

@Blades_Mad said: “You know what. Ramsdale and Norwood have come in for some understandable criticism this season, but they are two players who can be happy with their performances tonight.”

And @kerry642 posted: “We played alright today and Ramsdale was great especially first half but we need to try something new surely we’ve got nothing to lose at this point!”

@Algarvegit pointed to a forgettable displayby McBurnie: “A thankless task playing in a 2 up front with no support from MF. 2nd half OMcB was trudging aimlessly around like Connor Sammon rather than the player who terrorised the Blades when he played for Barnsley & Swansea.”

And @FletchRadio posted: “Could probably just retweet one of several tweets from this season. Huffed and puffed against opposition who are far far superior to us. Stayed in it for a while. Concede a shocker. Miss a sitter. Fizzles out”

Some just can’t wait for the summer.

@JoeBlade9 posted: “Big clear out needed in summer, probably biggest in a long, long time. So much dead wood and players not hitting the standards they've set themselves. Wilder will already know who's going, lads he thought he could trust have seriously let him down this year”

@TomMelody88 said: “The sooner these next 12 games go the better. Then overhaul the squad.”

And @b112chy summed up everyone’s thoughts: “Can season just end now?”
