Deane, who scored the first Premier League goal back in 1992 for the Blades against Manchester United, has kept close tabs on United and watched Wilder lead them from mid-table in League One to challenging for the Champions League in less than four years.

The pair were teammates at United under Dave Bassett in one of United's other successful periods in their history.

And the former England international said: "I've watched United for the last few years and what has been really refreshing to me is that the style of football has stayed, and Chris is still doing the same things.

"I like Chris's man-management because the players believe him and follow him all the way, and he's stuck true to his principles."

Deane was speaking at the latest instalment of The Biggs Bar, hosted by local journalist Alan Biggs at Omega Abbeydale.

"I remember watching the game against Villa at home last year and thinking 'I can't believe this type of football is being played here'," Deane added.

"Villa looked like they were scared to come over the halfway line at some points!

"It'll be developed as it goes along, the system. But if this is how United are going play for the next, say, 10 years, I think it'll be a great time for the fans."
