As The Star reported yesterday, the midfielder was granted permission to leave United’s training camp in Scotland to undergo a medical at the City Ground.

That deal has now been processed, after the two clubs negotiated a facility fee for the 28-year-old.

Intriguingly, Forest had suggested using Freeman, who joined United last summer, as a makeweight in Matty Cash’s proposed move to Bramall Lane. Cash, regarded as one of the most promising young defenders in English football, is one of Chris Wilder’s leading targets as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign - which United begin with a home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 14.

Freeman has made 16 appearances in all competitions for Wilder’s side, before suffering an injury during their defeat by Newcastle in June.
