Sheffield United Football Club will be top of its fundraising game at the 2017 Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon, Sheffield when it enters a team in aid of the Special Olympics GB Sheffield squad.

Club physiotherapists, masseurs, video analysts, kit men and accountants will join Jayne and David Thompson, parents of Special Olympics GB Sheffield’s Alex Thompson, and Luke Prest, of Club partner Whittam Cox Architects, to form a Blades team which will take on the 13-mile route across Sheffield next Sunday, April 9, in a major fundraising and awareness push.

The team, which is sponsored by North Derbyshire-based Whittam Cox, will tackle the endurance event to support the Special Olympics GB Sheffield squad, ahead of the games’ arrival in the city in August, when United’s Bramall Lane stadium will stage the opening ceremony.

Ashley Turner, CEO of Whittam Cox Architects said: “We were extremely happy to be able to sponsor the team and help them enter the race.

“Luke Prest, who heads up our Visualisation team and a lifetime Blade supporter, was going to be running anyway, so when the chance to run for a Sheffield United team arose it was a no-brainer.

“I ran myself last year and it’s a tough course, but it’s a fantastic cause and we’re absolutely delighted to support it.”

Dave McCarthy, Operations Director at Sheffield United, said: “What an effort and what a great cause to support.

“It’s fantastic to see so many United staff members taking on the Sheffield Half Marathon in aid of the Special Olympics GB Sheffield squad. Special thanks go to Whittam Cox Architects, who in Luke Pres, t are taking part in the event as well as sponsoring the team in their efforts.

“It’s also a great effort by Jayne and David Thompson, whose son Alex will be competing for Sheffield at the Special Olympics – it’s a pleasure to have them on board as part of our team.

“This is such a great, worthy cause and we’re encouraging anybody connected with the Club – be it staff, players, directors and fans – to give generously and donate what they can.”
